August Reflections

As this summer winds down, the humid August air of renewal is blowing in whether we're ready or not. It's time to head back to school or to full workweeks (sad goodbyes to those magical Summer Fridays). I hope your summers left you recharged and renewed, ready to take on the rest of 2014!

David and I visited our good friends in Lake Charles over the weekend. Best friends + scrumptious food + good ol'country = pure bliss. It was so nice to get away from the city and explore their farm, property, and cookbook collection.

I took this snapshot from the back cover of Talk About Good II: Le Livre de Cuisine des Acadiens, which has similar portraits throughout the book as chapter markers. That shirt...Cajun chic, y'all.  As you know from this post (oh, and this one), I am obsessed with cookbooks, and I was majorly jealous of their inherited collection.

August, although renewing, is also a good time for reflection. Six Augusts ago, I was beginning my first school year without my PawPaw: the man who provided my french lessons & who instigated my love affair with fried fish. Oh how I wish I knew then how special those "crazy cajun" moments were...I did not appreciate our quirky culture until rather recently. Now, I listen to Zydeco every morning while getting ready, I never pass up an opportunity for dancing or beignets or potato salad, and I've gained a revived appreciation for festivals.

Speaking of, what are your can't-freaking-miss Louisiana festivals? I'm really looking forward to the Blues & BBQ Festival!  Let me know in the comments below.

Southern Belle PSA: Daisy Dream

Y'all. I have not been so excited about a fragrance in a long time. Marc Jacobs wins again with Daisy Dream. Although it nods to the original Daisy (my all-time fav), Dream adds more fruit and a little blue wisteria, making it feminine & light yet still sophisticated. I have most of Marc Jacobs' fragrances, so I can't wait to add this delightful scent to my rotation.

The bottle is "toned down" for Marc which excites me even more! (See Dot...slightly embarrassing to display with my other perfumes.)  An elegant scent in a fun yet chic bottle? Sign. Me. Up.

I'm thinking of getting the rollerball scents in Daisy Dream and Tory Burch to keep in my purse as afternoon refreshers. With its heavier tuberose fragrance, I've been crushing over Queen T's scent for fall. I want her whole beauty line simply for the gold accented designs...

Do you keep a rollerball of perfume in your purse? What are your all-time favorite perfumes? Let me know in the comments below!

Lazy Picnics

In my more rebellious days, I skipped class to feed ducks & lounge at the LSU Lakes. Anyone else? Just a stone's throw from campus, fighting the temptation to head to the park was (and still is) a major battle.  Blame the picturesque Instagram accounts I follow or the adorable Lilly Pulitzer picnic basket D got me a few years ago...I just love picnics.

The scenery, the food, the's what summer dreams are made of.

1 - The first key to a great (albeit lazy) picnic: snackability. I love bringing fresh fruit, cheeses, raw veggies, etc. No need for a full meal here.

2 - Bread is great for making friends. When in doubt, bring a loaf. (The pictured ciabatta from Trader Joe's was scrumptious. It was large enough to share with some park-goers who wanted to partake in duck feeding.)

3 - Invest in a shower curtain liner. Really. They are the perfect barrier between the bugs/damp grass & your beautiful picnic blankets. You may look a little silly for .2 seconds while you setup...but you will be the envy of your fellow picnickers.

4 - Tunes! There's nothing wrong with playing music while you sip your champs. So long as you're in a public area, keep Lil Wayne at bay and everyone wins.

5 - Comfy attire is a must. You can never have enough LWDs, am I right?! I fell in love with this cotton frock after Amy donned it on Dallas Wardrobe. I added a few baubles and my trusty Jack Rogers for picnic perfection.

Where do you like to picnic? Do you have a go-to "picnic meal"? Let me know in the comments below!

Life Lately (on Instagram)

I refuse to believe my calendar.  There is just no way we're already seven days into July.  Summer: pump the brakes. Since my last post (ahem, four months ago), my two dearest friends got married...which meant I was on MOH duty.  I loved every minute of both engagements/weddings. They were beautiful & full of love & incredibly memorable.  I hope to share more deets & pics soon!

This summer has been marvelous.  The good news: I'm back to regular posting. Be sure to check back on Sundays, Wednesdays & Fridays for new posts! You can also find me here on Tuesdays & Thursdays.

Come follow along - @littlemissblink
I was in Ohio visiting family during our actual anniversary, so D & I had a belated celebratory dinner at our favorite restaurant in town, Ruffino's.
A group of Cajun gals headed to New Orleans for a lady-like bachelorette party. I always enjoy the tea service at Le Salon (lobby of Windsor Court), but this occasion was beyond splendid.

D & I finally found BR's best snoballs. The summer heat has us heading back for more...and more.

We headed back to D's home state for a little R&R with family. In true Texan fashion, we each left with 2 dozen tamales for our parents. Also: the fresh tortillas from H-E-B were a-maze.

July Fourth is my favorite holiday. Ours was pretty low-key this year, but it was wonderful. I can't wait to have my own place to entertain...#themeparties.

I'd love to hear about your summer so far. Are you looking forward to any trips or events? I'll be back Wednesday with one of my favorite pastimes...stay tuned!

Friday Favorites

Tufted headboard.
Crisp white bedding.
Miles of pillows.

There are few things that occupy my daydreams more than my dream bed. Yes, I already have my future bedding picked (hello, Serena & Lily), and my current pillow count is reaching double digits. Freshly shaven legs on warm sheets is definitely one of my top ten favorite feelings in the world.

My dream bed has five requirements: all white...everything; the fluffiest, most oversized down comforter; crisp, monogramed sheets; several pillows of varying fillings; and (obviously) a King sized mattress.

When I'm stressed, I love to imagine burying myself under a giant white cloud and not reappearing until the mimosa fairy calls for Sunday brunch. Until my dream comes true, I delight in little luxuries to make my bedroom feel more like a boutique hotel. A special candle. Fresh-cut flowers. Kiehl's Creme de Corps. Right now, I'm snoozing vicariously in these rooms -

Let's Chat

Mardi Gras translates to Fat Tuesday for most, but it was Sick Day for this girl. I used the head cold as an excuse to pile up a ton of blankets and catch up on the blogosphere. The list from Jennifer Blake's sweet blog was fun to explore, and I couldn't wait to share it with y'all.

Gone So Long

Wow. I have been gone for far too long. I can blame school and work and life, but the reality is that I have just been lazy. (Forgive me?) 2014 has hit like a hurricane. I simply refuse to believe it's already March 5. Within the next three months, my two best friends will be married, David will be finished with school, and I will be so much closer to graduation (aka real life). Now is the time to relish.

via timeplacemoment
January was filled with...
Brunches with my best friends.
Dinners & drinks to celebrate lots of birthdays.
Trip to Mandeville to visit David's best friend.
Celebrating David's 26th

February called for...
More birthdays. More time with family.
Celebrating my 23rd with Zydeco, dancing, & boudin beignets.
Pei Wei & gelato. Yes.
Baby gender reveal for another good friend.
Car shopping (to no avail).

So far in March...
Bridal shower for my dearest girlfriend, Jessie Lee.
Sharing my mom's finger-licking BBQ ribs with family.
Fighting a powerful head cold.
Coldest Mardi Gras I can remember. Brr.

I'm excited for what lies ahead. It's going to be a very busy (but oh so rewarding) year. I promise I won't stay gone so long again. What have you been up to this year? What are you most excited for in March?
